2017 Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay

A blend of chardonnay from the sites we work with in the Santa Rita Hills, the majority coming from the Wenzlau Vineyard. Here we have a long-term lease and farm the vineyard ourselves using organic practices. Wenzlau sits on a steep, dramatic hillside across the Santa Ynez River river from the famed Sanford & Benedict Vineyard.

In the cellar the wine is a combination of barrel and tank fermentation using native yeast. This is a wine that we believe best represents the potential of the region as a whole.


VINOUS - 92 pts. "The 2017 Chardonnay (Sta. Rita Hills) is a blend taken from Wenzlau, Bentrock and Sanford & Benedict. Creamy, open-knit and inviting, the 2017 is incredibly delicious. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and light tropical notes grace this subtle, gorgeous appellation-level wine from De Montille." - Antonio Galloni

2017 Bentrock Vineyard Chardonnay

Bentrock is situated on the extreme, western edge of the Santa Rita Hills on the Santa Rosa Road Corridor. We are fortunate to work with two parcels of Chardonnay there, both north facing slopes. The first sits on the far western side of the vineyard and on an extremely exposed perch looking out over the Santa Rita Hills on very rocky soils. Protected by the first parcel, our second sits a little lower and just to the east. This block is truly north facing with slightly more marine sedimentary soils.


VINOUS - 94pts. "The 2017 Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard is a striking wine that captures the essence of this rugged hillside site on the western edge of the appellation. Bright and finely sculpted, the 2017 is just loaded with character. Lemon peel, mint, white flowers, crushed rocks and intense saline notes build into the mineral-drenched finish. This is such a spectacular debut, not to mention a very pure expression of Bentrock." - Antonio Galloni

2017 Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Chardonnay

From the famous Sanford & Benedict Vineyard with a portion coming from the original plantings there dating back to 1971. These chardonnay vines are the oldest vines in the Sta. Rita Hills. situated on a gently north facing slope with thin soils consisting of lots of shale and chert.


VINOUS - 93 pts. "The 2017 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict has plenty of depth, texture and nuance, but it is also surprisingly tightly wound for a vintage in which wines are generally more open-knit. Bright, savory and intensely mineral, the 2017 is going to need time to soften. At this point, the 2017 is not terribly expressive of S&B, although it is quite attractive just the same." - Antonio Galloni

2017 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

From vineyards that lie on the Santa Rosa Road corridor of the Santa Rita Hills and farmed using organic practices. These sites consist of varying soil types from sandy loam, clay loam, chert, shale. This is a wine that we believe best represents the potential of the region as a whole.

Vineyards: Bentrock Vineyard La Encantada Vineyard La Rinconada Vineyard Sanford & Benedict Vineyard

On average, one third whole cluster is retained during fermentation using native yeast. We punch down for about three weeks before being put to standard 228l barrels for elevage.


VINOUS - 91 pts "The 2017 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills) is bold, punchy and super-expressive, with lovely aromatic nuance to play off the dark cherry and plum fruit. Classy and layered, the appellation Pinot is a wine of real character and breeding. Then again, that is not surprising given that vineyard sites are La Encantada, Sanford & Benedict, La Rinconada and Bentrock. The 2017 is a gorgeous wine from Etienne De Montille and Justin Willett." - Antonio Galloni

2017 La Rinconada Vineyard Pinot Noir

From the upper plantings at the La Rinconada Vineyard, neighboring the famous Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. Consisting of deep, dark, rocky soils. This is a selection of Mt. Eden clippings that Richard Sanford brought down from Northern California years ago.

In the cellar two thirds whole cluster, and fermented similarly to the Sta. Rita Hills cuvee. Put down to a third new barrels for 18 months before bottling.


VINOUS - 93 pts. "The 2017 Pinot Noir La Rinconada is powerful and explosive in the glass, with tremendous structural intensity driving a deep expression of site. Lavender, sage, mint, savory herbs and rich blue-toned fruit give the 2017 a distinctly virile, somber personality. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2017 is going to need time to be at its best." - Antonio Galloni

2017 Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir

A combination of three parcels throughout the famous Sanford & Benedict vineyard. Two of the plantings are 10-12 years old, but certainly responsible for the dark, deep core of this wine. The third piece, a small fermentation of the original, own-rooted plantings from 1971, bring the elegance and floral lift. Aged for 18 months in about forty percent new french oak barrels.


VINOUS - 92 pts "The 2017 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict is sensual, silky and impeccable in its balance. There is lovely nuance in the glass to match the wine's mid-weight, restrained personality. Sweet floral notes and purplish fruit linger in the glass. My impression is that the 2017 is still recovering from its relatively recent bottling. We will see." - Antonio Galloni
